There are a lot of tips out there for better sleep, but one problem often gets overlooked. A lot of times, we associate sleep with the ending of today and the beginning of tomorrow. If the current circumstances in our life are making us want to avoid "tomorrow", it can lead us to not want today to end. This can lead to avoidant behaviour such as continuing watching TV, playing video games or reading a book past bedtime, or even rumination when we're trying to sleep.
So what can help?
First of all, awareness. Check with yourself- Am I trying to avoid tomorrow? If so, will staying up later actually make tomorrow not come? The answer will always be no.
Secondly, if you are already in bed and find yourself ruminating, you can check in with yourself again- Will thinking about this right now help me solve anything? The answer to that will also usually be no. While this question might not solve your rumination immediately, asking yourself this everytime you catch yourself ruminating might help you become more aware of it, and help you fall asleep.
