According to Dr. Michael Posner there are three attention networks: alerting, orienting and conflict attention (executive attention). The orienting is usually working well when you have ADHD, the other two networks less well.
A nice analogy: Attention is like a Flashlight: alerting is like turning the flashlight on, orienting is like pointing it towards what you want to see and conflict attention is keeping the light in one place even if something else is distracting. Also like a flashlight, wherever you place your attention, the spot becomes illuminated and more clearly perceived.

If you struggle with your attention try to observe which parts of your attention are working well and which ones are more difficult to control. Reflect on the fact that there aren't only "wrongs". Talk to a therapist or a coach specialised in ADHD if you want to improve your attention and/or discover strategies to adapt your environment for less distractions.
