  • Alone or lonely?

Although the words alone and lonely are often used interchangeably, they are two distinctly different things.

Being alone just means: being on your own, without others. There's no emotion connected to it. It's just a factual notification. You can be alone without being lonely. In fact, being alone can be very pleasant.

Being lonely is something else. You can be in a crowd, so not alone, and yet feel lonely. The feeling of loneliness is caused by locking away a part of your personality. That part is not allowed to be and thus feels lonely. It's like a child version of you and like all children it wants to be seen and heard and accepted. However, you've learned to reject it (usually as a result of your upbringing).

The way to get rid of this feeling of loneliness is to integrate this child part of you. So, stop rejecting it and start embracing it. And like every child who feels recognized and accepted, he goes out to play and the loneliness is gone.

It's quite likely you'll have to do this several times. Actually, each time the feeling of loneliness comes up. Embrace it! This way the child part of you learns the present-day you is always there for him/her and he/she will no longer feel lonely.
